Birds working with people

According to Aboriginal tradition, birds were prominent among the ancestors who shaped the world. Aboriginal peoples believe that after the creation period was over, birds continue to help them in diverse ways. Birds are watched intently for signs to help make deductions about such things as local flooding, changes in tides and weather, the onset of new seasons and the presence of game animals and other people. They also assist with hunting, finding water and the spreading of fire. This chapter provides an account of the myriad ways, both tangible and intangible, that birds impact the lives of Aboriginal peoples, excluding those chiefly concerned with food/medicine sources and artefact-making materials, which will be discussed separately in Chapters 8 and 9.
